Common Questions Around Ultrasound Scans in Northern Ireland

Q. How many pregnancy scans do you have with NHS?”

For most pregnancies, The NHS will offer at least 2 ultrasound scans during your pregnancy:
at 10 to 14 weeks gestationand between 18 and 21 weeks gestation
The first scan is normally called the ‘dating scan’. The sonographer or midwife will estimate when your baby is due (the estimated date of delivery, EDD)
The second scan offered is called the ‘anomaly scan’. This is a more detailed scan that checks for certain abnormalities. This scan checks for 11 physical conditions in your baby.
You may be offered more than 2 scans, depending on your own health, your previous pregnancies (if applicable) and how your pregnancy progresses.

Q. Can you get an emergency scan when pregnant?”

This will vary in different hospitals and G.P Surgeries and will also depend on how far you are along in pregnancy.
In early pregnancy if your experience bleeding or severe pain, you may be referred by your G.P to your local early pregnancy unit or Accident and Emergency department to be assessed. They may also take blood tests to check hormone level if required.
As your pregnancy progresses, you may be advised to contact your local maternity assessment unit for advice. In an emergency, such as reduced fetal movement, this is extremely important.
Private ultrasound scans at Mourne Scan Clinic can be performed at any time for reassurance. However, we would always encourage you to contact your maternity assessment unit for advice.

Q. Can I get a pregnancy scan without a referral.

Absolutely, you can self-refer for all our available pregnancy scans. We offer a wide range of pregnancy scans. These include:
Early pregnancy scans (from 6 weeks+)Dating scansReassurance scans
Gender scans (from 16 weeks +)Anomaly (20-24 weeks)Growth4D (26-32 weeks)
You can search all our scans, choose and book on our online system or phone the clinic directly on 02830263712. We also take bookings via our Facebook page and Instagram accounts. If you are unsure of which scan you would like to book, you can contact us for advice, we would be happy to help.
